ESCO was selected as the civil contractor for the Core Electric facility project in Pine Junction, CO. The project scope encompassed earthwork, foundation and slab preparation, site utilities, wall excavation, and extensive rock removal. The project posed several challenges, particularly the need for significant rock excavation across multiple critical areas, including wall, foundation, and utility installations. Managing these excavations required careful coordination of blasting operations and precise equipment handling to maintain progress without impacting nearby work zones. Additionally, the steep terrain added complexity to utility installations, especially for storm sewers, sanitary sewers, and waterlines. These installations required innovative trenching techniques and detailed planning to ensure safety and accuracy while overcoming the unique topographical challenges of the site. Throughout the project, ESCO played a key role in identifying and implementing cost-effective solutions for design changes. Not only did these solutions help reduce expenses for the client, but they were also carefully selected to avoid delays to the project schedule. ESCO’s proactive approach ensured design changes were seamlessly integrated without compromising quality or delivery timelines. Major Items of Work: • Earthmoving & Rock Removal: Over 25,000 cubic yards of cut-to-fill and 50,000 cubic yards of export managed with precision to balance the site. Included blasting and removal of 5,000 cubic yards of rock in critical areas for wall and foundation excavation. • Wall Excavation: Completion of 18,000 cubic yards of excavation to prepare for retaining walls and slope stabilization. • Foundation & Slab Preparation: 1,500 linear feet of foundation excavation and backfill, alongside 4,000 square yards of slab preparation for structural elements. • Base Course & Paving: Placement of 9,000 tons of base course for pavement installation, ensuring durable and stable road surfaces. • Utility Installation: Installation of 3,600 linear feet of storm sewer, 3,300 linear feet of sanitary sewer, and 2,600 linear feet of waterline, all requiring careful coordination to navigate the steep site conditions and maintain alignment with design specifications.
