Berthoud Pass
Berthoud Pass, Colorado
project description
The Colorado Department of Transportation contracted with ESCO Construction Co. in the spring of 2017 to perform partial and full re-construction of retaining walls and roadway repairs along an approximately 3.5 mile segment from Berthoud Falls going up Berthoud Pass. The project started in June 2017 beginning with wall removal and replacement by shotcrete. ESCO performed the wall removal in four foot vertical intervals from the embankment side of the roadway utilizing a bridge inspection machine and scaffolding to safely perform the work. Forty eight locations, spread out along 6 retaining walls, were removed and replaced using reinforcing steel tied into the existing geogrid system and covered with shotcrete. The project had a short construction window, with a June 2017 start and a final completion by November 2017. ESCO completed the project prior to the milestone deadlines. This project won the Merit Award from Engineering News Record (ENR) for Specialty Construction!
